![]() The particular devil who's sent to collect the contract (Hell is, apparently, quite the bureaucracy) happens to be a fan of the philosopher, who's known for his atheistic views and his arguments in favor of moral relativity. and a wonderfully wry dose of humor.Ī brilliant and famed philosopher, entering his twilight years, decides to sell his soul to the devil. 'The Devil You Know' takes a familiar tale and gives it a genuinely new twist. One of my Hugo Award nominees, novella, 2016. I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best, most intriguing, most mindblowing books I've ever read. Right now, we've only gotten scattered details of Mysia and the surrounding kingdoms, but a part of me is really curious what else is happening in this world. While it isn't the main strength of this novel, I'm also really intrigued by this story's worldbuilding. The characters are interesting, both morally grey and funny. I honestly didn't expect much of what happened here. KJ Parker asks plenty of questions about gods and men here. I really don't know how to describe this. How was this somehow the cleverest thing I've read in my whole damn life. Maybe the best one is “mindblowing,” because I legitimately feel like KJ Parker just took my mind and threw it into the sun. ![]() I don't know how to put this novella into words. ![]()
